A modern version of the common bathtub.

The evolution of the bathroom tub can be traced back centuries. In the early ages a bath was a pleasurable exercise with a level of religious and social meaning intertwined as well. Both the Greek and Roman empires have numerous references to bathing as an activity and social phenomenon with specific references to bath tubs. In the contemporary world of today though, the bathroom tub has become quite the norm and is a key plumbing fixture.

Bathroom tubs are made from various raw materials though acrylic, fiberglass and enamel based bathtubs are more common. Bathroom tubs are also made of stone, ceramic and copper but these are mostly for aesthetic value. The bathroom tubs of today come in two distinct styles. The first is the ‘Western style’ which allows for the bather to lie down and a generally elongated in shape while the other style, referred to as the ‘Eastern style’ is designed so that the bather can sit up and are usually deeper and shorter than the western style.

The bathroom tubs we come across today come equipped with water drains and mounted taps and are also most often paired with a shower. While bathrooms tubs have traditionally maintained a rectangular shape, modern casting methods allow for various shapes, sizes and colors. This in particular helps change the classical look of a bathroom and allows designers to try out new layouts and forms to create creative interior spaces and designs.

Another type of bathroom tub that is more closely related to the western style is the Claw-foot tub which is usually manufactured with the use of cast iron and features legs sticking out of it as against standard bathroom tubs that are either built on the surface of the bathroom or sunken in.

Bathroom tubs too evolve constantly and today we have even more varieties. However these variants of the traditional bathroom tub meet specific functional requirements and are designed to better facilitate same. These variants include baby bathtubs which are meant to be used for bathing babies, hot tubs which are used mostly as part of therapy and whirlpool tubs or Jacuzzis.

Finally but most importantly consider whether you really need a bathroom tub. If the answer is a definite yes it is advisable that you consider the space within your bathroom and suitable placement that maximizes the convenience and functionality of your bathroom. Think well about the layout and the ideal size of the bathroom tub to avoid a crowded look. Then consider the shape as in if the bathroom tub should be rectangular and against a wall, sunken, or of the three walled alcove style.
